C A Blog Spot V2.04
Sat. August 28, 2010... a newly finished Whimsical House carving, H188 - in the round, sold at today's market. I didn't get a chance to post the picture. F134 went too. H189 ITR was finished today Th. 9-2.
August 25, 2010...
Please browse the slide show of carvings. They are best viewed by turning on the full screen feature then turn on the Show Info feature to best see the carvings and their Index Numbers.
One typo, where Carving H181 is seen as LH181, H181 is correct.
Aug. 21 the third best market day ever for sales! Thank you for your support. As can be seen in the Index I am way behind  given the amount of time it takes to replace a carving. But this is a good problem.

Cottonwood Bark Art
Whimsical Houses and Wood Spirits

Whimsical houses and Wood Spirits are what Carving Artist is about. Each of the houses and faces are hand carved in a piece of Cottonwood bark, signed, numbered, dated and copyrighted. Each one is a unique registered piece. I enjoy carving them and sharing them with all who enjoy them. I sell them from my shop, a local antique store and at a local Farmers Market in the summer--location maps below. Occasionally I venture off into an art and craft show as well.

Our Thanks to all our Armed Forces men, women and familes past, present and future for their sacrifice.

Legend of the Wood Spirits

They go by several names. Wood Spirit, Tree Spirit, Wild Man, Savage Man, Woodwose. What ever you call them, the next time you are strolling through the woods, keep an eye out for one of these elusive creatures. Most often glimpsed as a green man with leaves for his beard and hair, the Wood Spirit is said to be Lord of the Forest and Natural Things. Seeing one is said to be quite a lucky thing and European villagers used to go out on regular hunts, hoping to find a Wood Spirit to foretell the future of their village. They are extremely strong. Wood Spirits can tear an opponent limb for limb and can tame a wild animal, including ferocious dragons and skittish unicorns. At the same time they are gentle with maidens, children, and men of good heart. It is said that the forest will stand for as long as the Wood Spirit remains to keep order. And if you are lucky enough to see one, health, happiness and good fortune will be yours. But that does not happen often. Wood Spirits would rather see than be seen. Most sightings are by children or by the pure in heart. Carvers are believed to see, therefore, able to "bring the Spirit out" of the tree. Sometimes they see the nose of one poking through the bark of a likely log, and they coax out the features with their nimble knife blade. Sometimes they see the flow of hair in the grain of a gnarled root. As they carve they allow the Wood Spirit to reveal itself. When you take one home give it a place of honor. Give the Wood Spirit a name and include him in your audience when you tell jokes (Wood Spirits have a delightful sense of humor). If you do these things, your Wood Spirit will bring his gentle wisdom, humor, and luck into your home. Although it has never been confirmed, it just stands to reason that Wood Spirits reside in Whimsical Houses. They enjoy the loose design, funny shapes, uneven walls, wierd roof lines and well...just whimsical styles. This, after all, is the nature of them both.
